We had three patrols entered in the recent County Expedition Challenge - a weekend of hiking and lightweight camping.
The event started on the Friday night with the Scouts putting and their tents at Bentley Copse campsite and planning their hike for the Saturday. The planned 12 mile route took them from the campsite, through the hurtwood to blackheath before heading to Shere and Gomshall before heading back to the campsite.
On Saturday morning our teams cooked their breakfasts on Tangia (lightweight) stoves before taking down their tents and getting ready for their hike. Two of our teams were carrying all their food and tents for the weekend in rucksacks whilst our third, training team, was carrying daypacks with just the equipment needed for the hike. By 11am all three teams had left the campsite and had started their hike. Whilst none of team managed to complete the whle route they all had a great day hiking in the glorious sunshine - special mention must go to the training team who reached Gomshall by 5pm having completed about 10 miles of their route.
On their return the teams put up their tents and cooked a hearty meal before heading to bed - a shorter hike was planned for the Sunday morning.
On Sunday all three teams walked the 6 mile route (some took longer routes than others....). It was then time for lunch and the final points tally to be announced. All three of our teams achieved Silver standard - an improvement on last year's Green standards and a brilliant result. Who knows - maybe we'll reach gold standard next year!
